"Rock n' roll is not an instrument, rock n’ roll isn’t even a style of music. Rock n' roll is a spirit”. These are the words spoken by Ice Cube during his Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame acceptance speech. This statement perfectly exemplifies or mirrors my feelings towards the word 'rockstar'. The word rockstar has become synonymous with excellence with attitude in any field – not just music. When a person chooses a different path, is admired by their peers and stays true to who they are and their craft with zero regard to the court of public opinion, they transcend to rockstar status. This is my thinking process when I am presented with an offer to do a commission that is outside of my usual musical subjects, and there is no better example than Mr. Marlon Brando. Brando is the standard by which many actors are judged and his commitment to doing his art on his own terms makes him the definitive example the transcending I mentioned above.
