Self-Portrait

Jacob Mącznik

This moody self-portrait by the École de Paris artist Jacob Macznik is interesting in several ways: that he is looking not directly at the viewer but rather slightly to the viewer's left, that Macznik's genuinely narrow face is exaggerated to make it even longer, and that his face has a triangular overall shape (which was counterfactual). He looks a bit pale; that plus the overly narrow face make him appear physically tired or wasted. The most striking or dominant feature may be the large, dark, round irises his eyes, with hawk-like, determined focus.
