Tiffany collected artistic ceramics and began experiments in pottery making as early as 1898. He exhibited his own Favrile pottery at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. Between 1904 and 1914, his furnaces in Corona, Queens, New York, made slip cast and molded pottery to achieve a likeness to plants, flowers, and fruits. Although molded, the pottery was finished by hand. This vase was originally loaned to the Museum in 1925 by the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation. In a letter written by Louis Comfort Tiffany, he dated the vase to 1898, suggesting that it was one of Tiffany's earliest experiments in clay.
