Gil Nicolescu

Gheorghe Nicolescu

Gil Nicolescu (1942-2020) attended the Nicolae Tonitza High School of Fine Arts (1959), with Mihai Rusu and Alexandru Cumpătă as teachers. In 1963 he graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Pedagogical Institute, Bucharest, under the guidance of painters Rodica and Iacob Lazăr. After graduating, he combined his work as a painter with advertising graphics and design (stained glass, decorative panels, etc.). At the same time he teaches drawing in the school system in Bucharest. Since 1966 he participates in the annual and biennial exhibitions. Member of the Union of Visual Artists since 1968. He worked for a short time (1976) in the decoration department of the Bavaria Film Studio, Munich. Since 1978 he has been working in the United States, first as a freelancer for Gerald Shoenfeld Agency, executing layouts for various products. In the summer of the same year, he was hired by Pallete Printing in New York as art director until 1983, when he set up his own advertising graphics studio in New Rochelle (New York). In 1984 he attended postgraduate courses at the New York Institute of Technology and in 1992 at Monroe College in New Rochelle. Since 1998, he has re-entered the artistic life in Romania through several personal exhibitions and through participations in group exhibitions.
