This painting is a portrait of Abraham Rawlinson of Grassyard Hall, Caton, near Lancaster. It was commissioned by William Lindow (1726–1786), husband of Abigael Rawlinson (1740–1791), daughter of Abraham and Ellenor Rawlinson, shortly after their marriage on 9th December 1771.
It was to hang in their new house in Queen Square, Lancaster, with other portraits by Romney.
