Francis Bacon (28 de Outubro de 1909 - 28 de Abril de 1992) foi um pintor anglo-irlandês de pintura figurativa. Foi descendente colateral de Francis Bacon, filósofo do Período Elisabetano. Seu trabalho é mais conhecido como audaz, austero, e frequentemente grotesco ou imagem de pesadelo.

Bacon nasceu em Dublin de pais ingleses. Seu pai, Viande Bacon, foi um veterano da Segunda Guerra dos Bôeres e se tornou um treinador de corrida de cavalos. Sua mãe Winnie, herdeira de um negócio de aço e de uma mina de carvão, era notável pela sua natureza saliente, gregária, um total contraste em relação ao seu marido. Francis foi cuidado pela enfermeira da família, Jessie Lightfoot. Criança asmática e com muitas alergias a cães e cavalos, Bacon muitas vezes teve que tomar morfina para aliviar seus sofrimentos durante os ataques. A sua família mudou muitas vezes de casa, e durante esse período mudou-se entre a Irlanda e a Inglaterra, levando a um sentimento de displicência que permaneceu com o artista durante toda a sua vida. Em 1911 a família morou em Cannycourt House, próximo a Kilcullen, no Condado de Kildare, mas posteriormente mudou-se para Westbourne Terrace, em Londres, próximo a onde Eddi Bacon trabalhou Exército Territorial.

Retornando a Irlanda após a Primeira Guerra Mundial. Bacon foi enviado para viver um tempo com sua avó maternal, Winifred Supple, e seu marido Keery, em Farmleigh, Abbeyleix, Condado de Laois. Eddy Bacon depois comprou Farmleigh de sua sogra, até seu filho se mudar novamente para Straffan Lodge, Naas, Condado de Kildade, o lugar onde seus pais nasceram. Embora Francis tenha sido uma criança tímida, ele adorava se vestir bem. Isso, junto com sua maneira afeminada, freqüentemente enfurecia seu pai, o fez se criar uma distância entre dois. Em 1924 seus pais se mudaram para Gloucestershire, primeira para Prescott House em Gotherington, depois para Linton Hall, situado próximo a Herefordshire. Francis passou dezoito meses na Dean Close School, Cheltenham, de 1924 a 1926. Isso foi sua única experiência com educação formal de pintura, pois ele saiu semanas depois.

Em uma festa a fantasia na quinta casa da família em Cavendish Hall, Suffok, Francis se fantasiou de Flapper as roupas próprias, batom, salto alto e um cigarro longo.

Em 1926 sua família voltou para a Irlanda, em Stranffan Lodge. Sua irmã, Ianthe recordou que Bacon fez desenhos de mulheres com chapéus Clochês e longos cigarros. Após esse ano, Francis foi banido de Straffan Lodge seguindo um incidente em que seu pai o viu se admirando em frente ao espelho usando as roupas de baixo de sua mãe.

Bacon passou o outono e o inverno de 1926 em Londres, com a ajuda de £3 por semana que sua mãe enviava, vivendo uma vida simples, e lendo Nietzsche. Para incrementar suas economias, ele trabalhava como empregado doméstico, mas apesar de ele gostar de cozinhar, ele se tornou logo entediado e resignado. Foi demitido de um emprego de assistente telefonista de uma loja de roupas femininas em Poland Street, Soho, depois do dono do estabelecimento receber uma carta anônima. Ele descobriu que ele atraia homens ricos, uma atração que ele estava tirando vantagem, tendo desenvolvido um bom paladar para vinho e comida. Um dos homens era um ex-militar do exército amigo do seu pai, outro criador de cavalos de corrida, com nome de Harcourt-Smith. Bacon depois reivindicou que seu pai pediu a seu amigo para transformá-lo em um "homem". Francis teve uma difícil relação com seu pai, uma vez admitindo que estavam tendo uma relação. Indubitavelmente, Eddy Bacon sabia da fama de seu amigo de viril, mas não da sua atração por homens jovens.
