Silviu Oravitzan

Silviu Oravitzan-Crețu

Oravitzan (name inspired by the small city of Oravița, near the village where the artist was born) is an important contemporary Romanian painter, with numerous exhibitions and works in museums and private collections from Romania, Great Britain, France, Germany, Sweden, USA, etc. While apparently paying homage to the various geometric abstract painters of the 20th century, Oravitzan is considered to be rooted in Byzantine Art and, in general, the religious art of Orthodox Christianity. In spite of not taking cues only from Christian symbols and imagery (though the cross is present in most of his works), Oravitzan does have a take that is not secular, but profoundly religious, as many art critics have noticed his special use of light in a way that recalls „the primordial light”.
