Painted in December 1880, this is related to a larger work from 1878 measuring 27 x 42 inches, called Camels at the Well - Sallee, Morocco, which was included in Weeks’ estate sale in 1905, and last sold at Christie's, New York on January 26, 2011. The scene is described in the estate catalogue as follows: “Two camels have been led up to the well to drink by a young Moorish girl in her native costume, while the old camel-driver kneels and draws up the water” (Catalogue of Very Important Finished Pictures, Studies, Sketches and Original Drawings by the Late Edwin Lord Weeks, American Art Association, New York, 1905, No. 203).
