"Through the exceptional format and radical treatment of this manifesto-painting, Fernand Léger confirmed his place within the Cubist movement. A nuptial procession advances vertically around a married couple in a frontal space that is blurred by nebulous forms. Classical perspective is shattered into pieces by fragmentation and multiple points of view. Considered to be incomprehensible, the canvas caused a scandal: "I'm told it represents a slice of brawn with pistachios seen through a magnifying glass", one critic wrote. Only Apollinaire had a positive opinion: "Léger's work stands out as pure painting. No subject, a lot of talent."
